The Spectre That’s Haunting the ALA?

Professional gadfly and perpetual thorn-in-the-side of liberal librarians everywhere Dan Kleinman finally went and formed his own World Library Association to compete with what he believes is a sexually and politically corrupt American Library Association, in the long wake of new ALA President Emily Drabinski‘s public proclamation (in a now deleted tweet) that she is a “Marxist lesbian.” The WLA is designed to

foster safe environments for librarians, curate valuable reading materials for children, and maintain a public space that promotes information literacy and political neutrality. It will also provide a comprehensive database of laws and legal cases pertinent to libraries, with a focus on the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The WLA will stand with parents in legal battles for defending their children in school libraries, offering financial support and active assistance.

World Library Association Press Release, July 20, 2023

Dan’s nightmare version of the ALA does not do these things, but rather

  • fosters an environment of rampant sexual harassment and the sexualization and “grooming” of children
  • curates pornography and developmentally inappropriate materials for youth
  • promotes political bias, favoring the far left
  • obfuscates the law as it provides restraints and exceptions to the First Amendment
  • knowingly corrupts children and subverts the will of their parents
  • aims to promote Marxism and the tearing down of the capitalist economy and the freedom of opportunity it secures

Let’s be clear: Dan and his cohorts are delusional and this is all ridiculous. To understand the delusion and the reality it denies, I’m going to break it down into discussions of economics, sexuality, and law. Nothing definitive, just a few thoughts. Stay tuned.

  1. Whenever I feel down about my circumstances and choices, I think of Dan Kleinman, who wasted the last 20 years of his life and sacrificed his relationships with his family and all of his friends aside from other terminally online culture war obsessives because a book at his child’s school had a reference to skinny-dipping in it.
